News Entry Date -- December 27, 2003:
Rik is voicing the new TV commercial for Carry On magazine. Thanks to Chellie for this news.

News Entry Date -- December 16, 2003:

Rik has quoted recently regarding Ozzy Osbourne's recent quad bike accident. He said:

"My deepest sympathy goes out to poor old Ozzy. I’m particularly sympathetic as well towards the whole family because I know how much I had to depend on mine. I particularly hope he recovers quickly because I’m a big fan and I want to hear him sing again.”

Thanks to Lyndsey Allen for finding this quote...and good wishes to Ozzy as he recovers!

Rik was in Plymouth sometime recently to christen the new equipment rooms at Derriford Hospital. Derriford is where he spent several weeks after his quad bike accident in 1998. Thanks to Elizabeth Hammond for spotting this!

News Entry Date -- December 3, 2003:
More on the "is this the end of the Bottom ?" saga: When Claire Hensen called to buy tickets for the December 13th Watford show, the clerk on the other end called it "the last ever Bottom show". It sounds as if this really may be the end, but as there's still no official confirmation beyond the questionable November 22nd Daily Mail interview with Ade, this one is still a mystery!

The Weapons Grade Y-Fronts DVD commercial mentioned in yesterday's news has also been spotted on channel 5 by Lucy Madsen. Keep your eyes peeled for this one.

News Entry Date -- December 2, 2003:
The online version of
The Sun contains a good length video clip from the new Weapons Grade Y-Fronts DVD. The swear words have all been bleeped out, which makes for interesting viewing. Thanks to Lee Z for this news.

Katie Greenwood has seen a commercial advertising the new Weapons Grade Y-Fronts DVD and video on  ITV recently. It's not known how often or on what other channels the commercial will air. MELTTALK reports that Virgin Megastores are advertising the DVD as well.

For those who missed out on buying merchandise during the Bottom tour, the tour program lists http://www.mcintyre-ents.com as the place to order it. The link itself says "coming soon", so be sure to bookmark it and check back at a later date.

Filthy Rich & Catflap is due to be released on DVD in the UK and the US sometime next year. The UK release is to come first. Thanks to Fred for this news.

News Entry Date -- November 23, 2003:
Adrian Edmondson recently gave an interview with the Daily Mail which casts some doubt on how much work he'll be doing with Rik in the future. One of the things Ade said is  there'll be no more live
Bottom shows (in constrast to what Rik said a few weeks ago). It looks like the Daily Mail put a bit of spin in the article, but the question is: how much? You can read it here. Thanks to http://www.frenchandsaunders.com for making people aware of this article.

There was a full page feature on the Bottom tour in today's News of the World Sunday magazine. Thanks to Claire Henson, we have a scan for you to see!

News Entry Date -- September 11, 2003:
As a followup to yesterday's news on the BMI commercial, Cathy Basham found the following on
BMI's website that confirms it is indeed Rik doing the voiceover!

Release Date: 05 September 2003
Stars come out for bmi - TV weather sponsorship begins

bmi, the UK's second largest full service airline, will begin sponsoring the London Weekend Weather on ITV, commencing this weekend (5 September 2003).

The credits mark the beginning of the second wave of the airline's 'birds' creative and supports continuing national press activity.

In an escalation of the previous campaign, the bird characters now have voices - many of which will be instantly familiar including Ray Winston, Penelope Keith, Denise Van Outen, Rik Mayall and Simon Callow. The campaign will also feature surprise guests from classic British television.

The opening credits feature two or more birds set in various locations throughout Europe, chatting about the weather and proclaiming the virtues of positive thinking and holding high expectations.

The closing credits highlight bmi's offering as a full service airline with low cost fares the line "Welcome to low cost flights without the low expectations."

Amanda Burns, head of marketing for bmi, said: "The year-long sponsorship is an ideal fit for us, and is the perfect vehicle to communicate the brand values of bmi to our target audience. We are continuing with the bird theme as the previous executions proved so successful with consumers."

Nick Hastings, creative director of advertising agency Euro RSCG Wnek Gosper Partners BDDH, said: "The bmi birds are now full of personality. They are a great way to dramatise what is a very powerful positioning for bmi."

Notes to editors: o Media is by PHD and Drum PHD. Written by Liz Whiston and Dave Shelton. Produced and directed by One Post.

News Entry Date -- September 10, 2003:
A radio commercial for
Bottom Live 5 at the Cliffs Pavilion in Southend has been broadcast on Essex FM. It's very possible that other commercials are being broadcast in other cities in the UK. Keep your ears open!

Rik possibly does the voiceover for a new BMI Airlines commercial as the voice of a blue bird. BMI sponsors the ITV weather report. Thanks to melttalk and Cathy Basham for this information.

Several Bottom websites are publishing the following synapsis for Bottom Live 5. I don't know what the source of this information is, so please blame the other webmasters if this is incorrect =)

Kicking off on 3rd October at Glasgow’s Clyde Auditorium the show will offer Bottom fans all the belching, vulgarities and knock-a-bout laughs we have come to expect from these two psychopaths.

Rik and Ade of course star as the criminally insane no-hopers Richie and Eddie, who plan to save the World (and possibly destroy it trying) from a conflict much bigger than a mere Gulf War; the fight between good and evil.

Eddie has invented a time travelling toilet to help them along the way, but he’s not feeling himself. If only he wouldn’t get locked in it…

He has all the weaponry, but is too stupid to use it, whilst Richie thinks it’s all a pleasant social event – he’s quite looking forward to feeling the sand between his toes.

Rik says, "You better bring some spare underwear! This time, it’s death and destruction all the way. This is the big one."

News Entry Date -- September 5, 2003:
Thanks to Marie Koster for spotting an update from the official
Oh Marbella website. According to the site, the "World Premiere" of the film is being postponed from September 12th until sometime in October. The exact news from their site states:

According to the official
Oh Marbella website, the "World Premiere" of the film is being held on September 12th at the Cine Gran Marbella in Puerto Banus, Spain. It's a private invitation event only. Given previous gossip about the film needing money to be completed, it sounds as if this "premiere" may be a fundraising event. Thanks to Rachel Warner and Naftalie for spotting this.

A DVD release of the entire
The New Statesman series is due in the UK on October 13. Prior to this, only the first series was available on DVD. The DVDs will be available separately and as a box set. It's not known if extras will be included with the DVDs. Right now the only information on these releases seems to only be available on Play.com. Thanks so much to Carlos Verge for this information!

Thanks to Lyndsey Allen, who spotted the following from the August 15th issue of the Daily Mirror:

"Oh Marbella, comedian Rik Mayall's latest film (hailed by some as the next "Full Monty"), is stuck in the editing room as producers struggle to raise more than £1 million needed to finish it. Funnyman Rik stars as slimy con artist Greg Dubois in the film which is set on the sunshine resort on the Costa Del Sol. The first part of a proposed trilogy, it charts the exploits of three British couples and a cockney hitman, played by ex-eastenders star Mike Reid. The Fun Lovin' Criminals have been lined up to record the title track."

Lise Croon discovered an old audio interview Rik and Ade did to support Guest House Paradiso. It can be found at the following url: http://www.allmedia.com.au/interviews.html.

The BBC is holding an online vote for Britain's Best Sitcom. Some of Rik's previous tv work is listed in the BBC's pre-compiled voting list. You can also do a write in for a favorite show if you choose.

The comic, who was fined £1,000 and banned for three months for speeding, was full of remorse at the time.

But at the T3 party, he told us: "I can't stand that f***ing judge. I can't believe he took me off the road. How could he have banned me - the family entertainer?"

Thanks so much to Justine Parrish for sending in the following news. It's being quoted directly so as to not lose any detail from the story:

We went to see Present Laughter last night in Bath, and we waited around to see Rik after the show for photos, autographs etc, and I asked him about Bottom 5, and that I'd heard that they hadn't even written the script yet (info I learnt from your site, and I also brought up a few other things as well) and he was like 'how do you know these things???' I said it was all on the Rik Mayall website. He said to go on and tell the readers that he and Ade got togther last week, in his break from doing the Guildford and Bath shows, and that they wrote the script. So, I thought, he who beckonith must be obeyed, and let you know. Rik was fab in the show, and really lovely in real life, and terribly funny...We got some really wicked photos of him that I will send you when we get home soon. Love the site, keep up the good work Cheers, Justine (die hard Australian fan)

On March 6th, Rik and his
Present Laughter co-star William Mannering ("Roland Maule") presented a post show discussion at the Richmond Theatre in London. They took questions from the audience about the show, it's evolution, and also Rik's career. Rik took the lead in the discussion most of the time, and was a bit annoyed when an audience member asked if the play was being presented as a farce on purpose. When he was asked about the upcoming Bottom tour, Rik revealed that he and Ade have yet to write the script even though some venues have already begun selling tickets for the show.

Our ninth website poll, which asked "Which of these Rik projects do you like the LEAST" finished a few weeks ago, and Drop Dead Fred was the "winner", followed closely behind by Merlin: The Return. Click here for the full results.
