News Entry Date -- December 1, 2002:
Rik has
recorded the audio book version of Ben Elton's High Society. It's
just been released on audiotape by Random House Audiobooks.
"High Society is a wonderfully brash expose of sex, drugs, politics and the celebrity lifestyle. Elton's polemic comedy on the misuse of drugs has been superbly abridged, and wonderfully enhanced by the velocity and impeccable comic timing of Rik Mayall. He brings Elton's superbly drawn characters and satirical tour de force to life with a fine degree of inventiveness. Those familiar with Mayall's work will recognise his idiosyncratic style and bold characterisations."
The Peter Cook Tribute that Rik took part in in September will be broadcast on BBC 2 on December 27th. Thanks to Kate for this info!

Rik recently answered those who criticized his appearance as Hitler in the Anti Euro video. In an interview with The Sun, he says, "my wife is Jewish, so my children are Jewish, too, as the Jewish race goes through the mother’s line. And I suppose that if the SS were to march in, I’d be in the concentration camp for collaboration simply for marrying Barbara.”
Matt Campbell reports that Series One of The New Statesman will be available on DVD in Australia on August 7.
A copy of the script for the second episode of Believe Nothing can be found here. Please note that this scan has not been edited and checked yet, so there are several typos and formatting errors.
News Entry Date -- July 4, 2002:
The anti-Euro film
that Rik appeared in is now online at no-euro.com. I've also added it to this
website in case there's too much traffic on the no-euro site. It can be
accessed (in Real Player format) by clicking here. Rik
appears for about 3 seconds towards the end of the spot as Hitler. It is VERY
quick, so don't blink. See a still photo of Rik as Hitler (or more like Charlie
Chaplin as Hitler?) here. In it, Rik says: "Ein
Volk! Ein Reich! Ein Euro! Euro? Oh yes please!"
This is what the no-euro site has to say about the film (thanks to Monica for pulling info out of the PDF file):
The no cinema advert Stars of this 90 second film include Diane Abbott MP, Phil Cornwell, Harry Enfield, Bob Geldof, Kate Hoey MP, Jools Holland, Rik Mayall, Tony Parsons, Gordon Ramsay, Vic Reeves, John Sessions and Johnny Vaughan. These individuals represent a range of backgrounds and views, but they are all united in their opposition to the UK joining the euro. They all agreed to take part in the film on a voluntary basis as their way of showing support for the no campaign.
The advert will appear in Odeon and UCI cinemas across the UK from 12 July. It will run for 3 months and will be seen by at least 5 million people. It will trail several films, including Birthday Girl (Nicole Kidman), Windtalkers (Nicolas Cage), The Sweetest Thing (Cameron Diaz), The Road to Perdition (Tom Hanks and Paul Newman), The Bourne Identity (Matt Damon) and Kissing Jessica Stein (Jennifer Westfeldt) — see Carlton Screen Advertising’s schedule for more details.
A direct mail campaign, featuring personalities from the film, will take place in the autumn.
Rachel Warner has discovered that Rik will be interviewed in the July 7 (London) Sunday Times. Also be sure and get hold of the Brit TV listings magazines that come out on July 9th as Believe Nothing premieres July 14 at 10:05pm on Carlton & LWT.

Thanks to Jane Sallis, one of the lucky people able to see the first Believe Nothing taping, here's the synopsis they handed out to those attending the taping:
Rik Mayall is Quadruple Professor Adonis Cnut, the cleverest man in Britain (if not the world). Adonis is irresistible to women, consulted by governments and paid huge amounts of money for his appearances on the Moral Maze. But he is bored and needs new and exciting challenges to service his mighty mind. Adonis' first challenge is to fill the thirteenth and final seat at "The Council for International Progress" — a shadowy underground organisation that controls and manipulates everything in the world. His second task is to try and get the luscious Doctor Hannah Awkward (Emily Bruni) into bed — but she seems to be the only woman in the universe capable of resisting Adonis' advances. Throughout all of his adventures, Adonis is accompanied by his faithful yet sinister manservant, Albumen (Michael Maloney).Set in the present day, against a backdrop of globalisation, global warming and a lot of other things staring with global, BELIEVE NOTHING satirises modern day living and takes us into a parallel world where everything is slightly skewed..."
